B'nei Mitzvah

Becoming bar and bat mitzvah in WLS is exactly the same for girls and boys. And it’s not just a matter of cramming for a performance in the synagogue – it’s a fully involving educational programme that takes place over a minimum of four religion school terms. We require all bar and bat mitzvah to have taken part.

The preparation classes are a natural continuation of the religion school curriculum, designed to stimulate children on the threshold of maturity.

This is what they study:

  • The responsibilities that come with being a Jewish adult.
  • Jewish culture and tradition.
  • Practical Hebrew reading skills, which are brought up to a good standard.
  • The structure and meaning of synagogue services.
  • And, of course, the Torah portion that they will read in front of the community on their Shabbat – not just how to read it with confidence (and how to deal with their nerves!) but also about its meaning and its relevance.
