Jewishly Important
Why is a webcam Jewishly acceptable and important:
- One of the central mitzvoth of Shabbat is ‘oneg’ to create joy. If people are able to join us for the celebration on Shabbat, even through the internet, it increases the joy for them and for us.
- We are told to ‘remember’ Shabbat, how do people who can’t be at the service remember Shabbat. By joining us through the internet we provided a practical way for people to remember Shabbat
- For some people coming in to the synagogue on Shabbat can be very difficult, challenging the idea of Shabbat as a day of rest
- There is no need for there to be work involved in the webcasting of a service as it can be set up to run automatically, simply requiring a camera to be switched on at the beginning of the service.
- Using the computer and internet for Jewish observance and prayer on Shabbat would appear to be another way of setting the day apart, using technology in a way in which we don’t the rest of the week.

Instructions for accessing the WLS Broadcast Facility: You can access the broadcast using the link on the WLS website (as above) or via the list of broadcasting communities on the Movement for Reform Judaism website. If you have a problem connecting using Internet Explorer as your browser, please use an alternative browser, for example, Chrome or Firefox. Alternatively, the system is available via the internet on http://www.wls.org.uk/broadcast. The first time you use the system, Veetle will ask you to load their “TV plug-in”. This is simple to do and only happens the first time you use the system. The “plug-in” effectively turns your computer into a TV. It takes only a couple of minutes to load the program. During the loading, the plug-in will offer you extra software, for example, Chrome or DriveScanner. These are NOT needed, so you can decline them. If you find you do not get a good picture straight away, please reboot your computer as this normally solves the problem. If the picture freezes during the service, please refresh the screen and this should solve the problem. Please watch the broadcast in full screen mode to avoid adverts. If you have any questions or require any help or would like to give us feedback on your experience, please contact Simon Myers on 020 7535 0268 or click here to email. Notice to all Members Members should be aware that our services are now being broadcast. As you will see the picture is static and ONLY shows the bimah and not the congregation. It means that your image will be broadcast if you go onto the bimah during the service. If you do not wish to be on camera, then you should not approach the bimah. |
