In each classes two thinkers are introduced. Sources are provided and studied. Every class ends with a balloon debate.

This week:

  • Sabbatai Zevi (16tth Century, Turkey); self-proclaimed Messiah, started the most important mystical movement in modern Jewry.

  • Jacob Sasportas (17th Century, Holland); practical, and theorethical opponent of the Messianic movement of his time.

Communal Erev Shabbat Dinner (6:00PM)

WEST LONDON SYNAGOGUE IS DELIGHTED TO INVITE YOU TO A
COMMUNAL SHABBAT DINNER FEATURING SIR MICHAEL RICHARDS, NATIONAL CANCER DIRECTOR AND NATIONAL DIRECTOR OF END OF LIFE CARE, WHO WILL BE TALKING ABOUT END OF LIFE CARE ISSUES, INCLUDING THE RECENT COMMISSION ON ASSISTED DYING. HE WILL ALSO BE ADDRESSING CANCER TREATMENT ISSUES AND SURVIVAL RATES IN THE UK.

This remarkable documentary tells its story through short interviews with many commentators, and a fly on the wall look at Alan Dershowitz in class at Harvard Law School. A professor of law, and one of Israel’s most prominent and articulate advocates, Dershowitz presents a vigorous case for Israel’s basic rights – to exist, to protect its citizens from terrorism and to defend its borders from hostile enemies.

Insight Israel: Israel 2011 - A Year In Focus (7:30PM)

We are delighted to welcome back to West London Synagogue, Mr Alon Roth-Snir, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Israel.

Join us for what will be a particularly fascinating Insight Israel event, especially in a year packed with so many watershed moments and events affecting Israel including the Arab Spring and the release of Gilad Shalit. An engaging speaker, Mr Roth-Snir will cover a variety of topics and will take questions from the audience.

In the main Sanctuary On the first and third Friday evening of the month This is a less formal version of the Friday evening service. The rabbi is accompanied by a group of musicians. “Shira” means singing and the emphasis is on a vibrant, participatory service with lots of singing and modern music. There is no sermon.

  • Vilna Gaon - Elijah ben Shlomo Zalman Kramer - (18th Century, Lituania); founder of the yeshiva as we know it. Inspirer of the opposition to the mystics Hassidism. Not necessarily a rationalist.
