A Special Screening / UK Premiere of Avanti Popolo (1986, remastered 2018) dir. Rafi Bukai
By kind permission of the Jerusalem Cinematheque, we offer exclusive access to a restored version of classic film Avanti Popolo, digitally remastered in the labs of the Cinematheque itself, with crisp images and a beautiful new look. ‘Avanti Popolo’ is a song of resistance, the call to arms of the Communist movement in Italy, but the film of this title is very much a wry look at the Six Day War from the perspective of the soldiers of two jaded armies, the Israeli and the Egyptian. These unheroic soldiers wander the Sinai Desert after the ceasefire, in search of safety, and have a series of comical encounters with other groups. At a deeper level the film tells us something about the essential nature of war. Join us at this Kolnoa Special screening, a UK Premiere for the new version of this magnificent film. Please note, our screening of ‘King Bibi’ on this date has been stepped down so as not to clash with the JW3 rescheduling of King Bibi to 28 March – Kolnoa WLS regulars are encouraged to see King Bibi at JW3 before the Israeli election to which it so clearly relates.
Doors open 7pm for drinks and snacks, 7.45pm screening, and admission is free, but donations towards catering are very welcome.
