Co-Senior Rabbi, educator and LGBT+ advocate, David has served our community since 2011, heading up our membership, strategy, services and festival provision. Before coming to West London Synagogue, Rabbi David served as Associate Rabbi for Radlett Reform Synagogue and Director of Education for Finchley Reform Synagogue.  In all three congregations he has made it his absolute priority to build meaningful relationships with members, adding the personal touch to life-cycle moments such as weddings and mixed-faith blessings. 

Ordained at Leo Baeck College in 2009, David went on to serve on their faculty, assisting rabbinic students with their vocational training. Alongside his teaching, David is an enthusiastic student of biblical narrative. He was awarded a distinction for his rabbinic thesis, which explored the themes of gender and violence in the Book of Genesis. Currently, he is researching for a PhD in Bible and Gender as a continuation of his MA degrees in Jewish Education and Jewish Studies.

Rabbi David was raised in an Orthodox home and discovered Progressive Judaism during his undergraduate years at St Peter’s College, Oxford. It didn't take him long to realise that he had found his spiritual home. His journey into the rabbinate was a discovery of an ‘Inclusive Judaism’, the title of his recent publication with Rabbi Jonathan Romain (2020). Their previous collaboration resulted in an edited collection of sermons called: Terror, Trauma and Tragedy (2016)

David is driven to make each person feel at home in the Jewish world. He has championed progressive advances within the Assembly of Reform Rabbis UK, including co-chairing the working parties on Inherited Status and Mixed Heritage Wedding Celebrations. He was the founding co-chair of Keshet UK and is a passionate advocate for diversity and equality. His unique partnership with Co-Senior Rabbi Helen Freeman is based on a decade of collegiality, a shared work-ethic, and their complementary skills. Together they strive to build a holy and caring congregation in the heart of Central London.

As well as being a vegetarian, animal lover (he is working on a pet prayerbook), and keen gardener, David is a patron of Save the Congo, and a trustee of the Jewish Aids Trust. He and his husband, Ian, were one of the first same-sex Jewish couples in the UK to get married, and the third generation of Ian's family to stand under the chuppah in our beautiful Sanctuary.
