Shards of Light Appeal

A once‑in‑a‑generation opportunity to help create the Sanctuary’s new stained‑glass windows

WLS is commissioning two beautiful and symbolic stained‑glass windows to complete the upper level of our Sanctuary. The two rear niches have long appeared unfinished—unlike the others, they contain no stained glass. As we restore our magnificent Sanctuary, now is the moment to put that right.

The two windows are made up of almost 700 individual shards of glass. We are inviting Members to sponsor one or more shards and help bring the windows to life.

Each shard is a tangible, physical piece of the window. Every donor, at every level, becomes part of the building itself. This is how the whole community leaves its imprint.

The Meaning Behind the Design

The new windows will be installed in custom lightboxes that preserve the original architecture. These windows will be seen every week and witnessed at life‑cycle moments. They will be part of the Sanctuary for generations to come. Your shard isn’t symbolic — it is literal.

Beacon of Faith Stained Glass Window

Beacon of Light

This is a geometric design symbolising guidance and stability, whilst its brightness and deliberately positive style also picks up on our founding mission to be “a beacon of light” within and beyond Anglo Jewry.

Tree of Life Stained Glass Window

Tree of Life

This depicts an almond tree and wheat field and symbolises renewal, perseverance and hope which are all characteristics deeply rooted in Jewish tradition. Moreover, this window will serve as our covid memorial, enabling us to recognise all those members and loved ones of members who died during the pandemic.

Shards of Light—Your Gift

One shard alone is beautiful. All 700 shards together form something extraordinary. This project is a powerful expression of what a community builds collectively.

If you are sponsoring a shard of glass in someone's memory, please let us know in the comment box below.
